Rusting wheel hubs...

Hey all,

Does anyone else's GTI have rusting wheel hubs like these?

(A bit of background, the car is parked in an underground parking area away from rain or water, although it has been driven in the rain quite a few times)

If noone else has it, I might give the dealer a call.

Dodgey :D

On normal, unpainted hubs it would be normal...but the GTI ones are painted aren't they? IN which case yes you should get your dealer to look at it.... looks like the paints coming off.

Mine are definitely rusted but I don't recall them looking exactly like that. Here's something to try: When I rotated my tires I washed the rotors, etc with some soap&water and a sponge. I had these like splatter marks of that real vivid orange rust on those black metal guards going around the brake disk. It came right off! Probably just rust dust from the brake disc that got rubbed off by the pads and splattered on the rest of it. If yours stays out of the weather a lot it might just be dust that's accumulating. Try popping a wheel off and see if you can clean it off, or if it's really on there.

Yeah, I'll do it this weekend and see. It doesn't look like rust dust that has settled on the hub though.

I'm guessing that it is all fine and not harmful to the car

surface rust only, nothing to worry about, you will get this on your actual rotors after they get wet too. Just use wire brush to scrap off rust then prep and paint again if you want too

Thanks everyone, I emailed my dealer, and he came back with the same answer. Also offered to get it cleaned and painted if I'm really worried, the next time I am down there.
