Overseas VW delivery?

After my cousin saw my GTI, he's hooked. Anyway, he is currently stationed in Germany and about to retire. He wouldn't mind ordering one now and taking delivery of it in Deutschland. That way, he could drive it around on the autobahn for a while before bringing it across the pond.

Anyone here ever taken overseas delivery of a VW? Do they do that? I know BMW, Saab, Volvo and others do.

What about buying a GTI there and bringing it over here?

But, there are ways you can do this. It usually costs about $1000 to ship it with a boat. With EU being more lenient with the emissions, I don't think you would have problems. I dont know about papers.

We thought about getting a German spec GTI (the lower springs would be a plus), but the EU being more lenient about emissions would be one of the major concerns. They now do emissions testing where I live. He may have to fork over thousands once it is stateside just to get it compliant. That is why getting a US spec GTI is what we're thinking. Also, the warranty may be an issue too.

With other makes who do overseas delivery, they'll ship the car back to the states included in the price. Also with other makes' overseas delivery plan, you usually save enough money to pay for, or almost pay for your trip to Germany/Sweden/Italy or wherever you pick it up. And you usually get to tour the factory to boot.

If he is over there with the military, there should be a way to buy a US spec car through the PX/BX. I know they sell pretty much any car or truck that you can buy here. He should have the option to either pick it up there and then have it shipped back with his household goods, or to pick it up here when he get back.

He's flying back right now and was going to look into that when he arrived. He wasn't sure that AAFES dealt with VW. Thanks for the info.
