Is your radio reception very bad with just one connector? I just hooked up one and mine seems to be OK... same then before even... although I do live just outside Boston and all the radio towers are around here... I'll have to check it out when I go for a drive. Who needs radio when you have DVD MP3 and SD cards!? haha love this new unit

No, not bad... but I think I can make it a little better. I live in "The OC" and most of the radio stations are in Los Angeles for me I think.

I get the radio stations fine, but sometimes it's got a little static. Plus, I know one of the antennas is unplugged back there with a solution to get it plugged, so it really really bugs me.

Anyone know if the W6050 will play Xvid, not to get confused with Divx?

question

the OP mentioned that the stock sat radio wont work with this headunit

well does anyone know how we can get the stock sat radio to work with this unit or is there anyway to get any sat radio working with his unit?

ive really been in the market to get an indash dvd unit...but with all the added extras needed to install an aftermarket unit it gets a tad bit expensive to do so...so after seeing this thread this unit has piqued my interest

thanks

Only thing I can think of is getting an external radio unit and just plugging it into the aux-in cables.

I Have been using this for a few days now, The brightness of the interior lights matches perfectly in my opinion. The fit and finish is on par with the OEM units.

[About iGo 8 Navi Software]

iGo 8 included only had basic maps for Canada, so I had to update to iGo 8 (R3) the Navteq maps of the R3 version is the same as the Garmin maps which are the best for North America Even the POI's are more accurate.

[About GPS hardware]

I had to move the GPS antenna from under the dash back up to the mesh part of my center vents the magnetic bit under the antenna attaches perfectly to the metal mesh and it's barely noticeable and now gets musch better reception even in downtown Toronto with all the tall buildings.

[Problems I've encountered]

*** Ipod connector >>> I seem to have lost my Ipod function. It was fine for 2 days and just this afternoon... with my Ipod connected and the menu is still greyed out and I cannot access my Ipod menu on the GPS unit.

*** Volume settings >>> My GPS is always muted every time I start the car or access a diffrerent HU function, even though I have already set the desired volumn for the GPS before I shut off the car.

[Installation]

It was a breeze, took a total of around 23 Minutes from unpacking to the trim back on and radio on and GPS booted. It's easier to install then a printer and a printer is pretty easy to install. :)

And some Pics.

There's some dust on my Dash but it shows the fit and finish and how it blends to the OEM trim.

If this sucker had VGA input I'd be all over it. I still don't understand why it's so difficult to find a unit with a VGA input. Us CarPC users get the shaft on head units big time.

Other then the ipod adapter which stopped working I have been working on some simple mods for this unit. I played around with the color settings and I have made new day and night color themes if anyone wants to try them out. :) It's made for iGO 8 (R3)

The VW loading screen

Night Mode (Black Background, Different shades of Blue Road...matches speedo lights, Red Guidence Path...matches red lights, Yellow Path Arrows... matches doorlock lights)

Day Mode (Blue Guidence paths... I just updated the file, Red Freeways/Highways/Motorways... and other easy to read colors. Yellow Guidence Arrows.)

Volkswagen Theme for iGo8 R3 Version 1 (Updated)

ohh hell yeah, I need a VW theme! Although the DimkaWRV skin is my favorite thus far. Tons of options and add-ons... are there sites out there with lots of skin options? I can only find a few and they are all based out of Australia!

the DimkaWRV skin was pretty buggy for me, I had to revert back to default. Maybe I didn't download the right version.

This is just a color scheme, I am working on a RNS-510 like skin for it right now... I'll just see how that goes. Skins are really time consuming becuase all the buttons are animated and you literally have to edit every frame for each button.

Actually check this out The new Audi MMI 3G looks alot like it's iGo based, maybe this skin can be imported or made for iGo 8

Since KV12 has so many posts in this thread, I am going to hijack this a little for us Canadians. First of all thanks for all the good info.

I am debating getting this HU, sounds good from all the reviews. KV12, judging by some of your maps you are in the GTA (404 and Steeles, drive past there everyday), just wanted to ask you 2 questions. One, how is your GPS reception? Two, from what I saw in this thread, looks like you can only have one antenna wire hooked up for FM, how is your FM recpetion (I know, I know, who wants FM when you have this unit)?

Actually 1 more, you said your Ipod stopped working? Are you talking about the front connector? I heard this cable isn't great quality. I only ask because, before I started debating this unit, I ordered the GROM ipod adaptor. So if I do get this, from what I am reading, it should still work through the CD Changer, might be an option for you if the ipod is important to you.

Amended: I overlooked your "GPS HARDWARE" comment, you say reception is "good", from where you placed your antenna. In this case my question is, do you connect right away? Is it spotty? Would you be able to compare to example a Garmin NUVI unit (which I currently use).

GPS Reception is good just as good as the Kenwood GPS I've had and even my Portable NUVI which I still have. Signal will cut out in underground parking lots, and it will be spotty in my garage. rarely and only sometimes the GPS drives will fail to load, all you have to do is to take out the key and restart the car to restart the unit and the drivers will be reloaded, however once the GPS is up and running it will not cut out in the middle of it.

I get both AM and FM reception perfectly I am really surprised.

I don't think the port stopped working, I highly believe the supplied Ipod cable (I think it's outsourced) is cheaply made. If that Ipod adapter system connects the same as the OEM CD changer I think it will work as well.

Does anyone have a link to the igo 8 website with maps for the US? The only site I can find has nothing but European maps listed.

You aren't looking hard enough. Read through the whole thing on that site. I gave hints in a previous post.

No... it's not a usb connector. In fact... I'm not sure what it is. It looks like a USB port, but it's not.

So, I am still sorely tempted to get this thing. But I really want a step up in audio quality of the stock HU. I love all the blingy features, but if its just "as good as" the stock HU, I'll have to pass.

The question I have, is what can you get in a HU for the same money?

Can you get, say, an Alpine or Kenwood single DIN with double DIN mounting, and steering wheel control adapter thingy and bluetooth?

The features I NEED are iPod integration (and charging second gen Touch), BlueTooth for hands free phone, good quality audio. The things I like are blingy touch screen, GPS, better on screen interface, factory look. The thing I want is line level out to avoid using a LOC. (I have a 4 channel amp and sub amp to do a full setup.)

If I felt the audio quality of this thing was an improvement over stock, then I'd go with a LOC solution for the amps, as it looks like factory but is drool worthy. But if the audio isn't a step up, I can't trade quality for bling and will settle for non-factory look of Kenwood/Alpine. Its freaking drool worthy though looks-wise.

I am also concerned by the few reports of things like iPod not working and bad soldering breaking, etc... Warranty on this is basically non-existet, right?
